Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

If you fancy yourself a Chipotle fan then you have to come to the city market and try iBurrito Bros! I just finished a carnitas burrito with rice, pinto beans, veggies, cheese, guac. pico and a spicy combo of hot 5 pepper and all consuming fire sauce. Hands down a better burrito than Chipotle. Plus you get chips and sauce for free?!? Score. Price is right help is friendly food was great. Yum!

Although it is super crowded on the weekends, coming during the farmers market makes for excellent people watching and a nice break from your shopping excursion. As for food, highly recommend the chorizo - it is pretty unbeatable! Try it in a burrito bowl with guacamole on the side. Can't wait to come back and try more items on this vibrant stop's menu.

Alright Burrito Bros, you can sign me up for your official fan club. This little spot was great! I've heard about it over the years and hadn't tried it out for whatever reason, and was really glad when a lunch opportunity popped up here. It's tucked into the City Market and a bit of a hidden gem. It's easy to think, "Oh, this is like Chipotle," when you first walk in. I mean they have burritos, tacos, burrito bowls.. But for the sake of an objective review I'll try not to compare them. The gregarious owner here seems to know the regulars by name and is about as friendly as you could imagine. I took the lead of a veteran in the Burrito Bro fan club and tried a burrito with shrimp, guac, rice, and medium salsa. It was really good and more than enough food. I'm turning into a spicy-food addict and think that next time I'll try one of their hot salsas with quite a bit of kick. They do have a good table salsa that has a nice, vinegary flavor plus a pepper kick. This spot definitely has my eye when I am in the City Market area, and is absolutely worth checking out if you haven't been.

Visiting KC and the city market. I see a handwritten sign advertising tamales, pork or beef. Tamales are the standard I use to evaluate all Hispanic establishments so I popped in and ordered one to go. Pork with verde sauce, hot and regular. The man at the register was fantastically friendly and the service was quick. Later, I warmed this corn husk wrapped tamale in my hotel microwave, added a blend of both sauces. It was so delicious, even reheated. I am glad I don't live here because it could be an addiction. I am here the rest of the week, I will be going back for lunch. It will be hard to try something different but I will try to force myself.

It's that good.... whatever you've heard, whatever you've read. Its true. This place nails it. All around nails it. As I'm writing this I'm trying to scheme my next trip to River Market and pay a visit to my favorite burrito place on the PLANET. Yes, I said the Planet. Fresh, spicy (if you like), and authentic. I am a Chipotle fan; but Burrito Bro's puts it to shame, and any other burrito joint for that matter (I'm looking at you Fuzzy Taco's). Ok I'm hungry - I'm legitimately driving there now for lunch... and its about 45mins from my office. Worth it. In closing - this place is seriously delicious, if you haven't tried it yet go. If you have, go again.
(5)Jean K.
Best carnitas anywhere. Beats Chipotle, hands down. The bowls are delicious and the staff very friendly.
(5)Amber H.
Great pork tamales! The sauces were fresh! There is a lot of seating thru the right doors. Tamales were flavorful.

While we were exploring the City Market and browsing all the amazing food available there, my wife and I decided to grab lunch at Burrito Brothers. I had the burrito bowl with carnita and it was edible. The rice and beans were just that and no seasoning to be found. Carnita was tasty but a little too "wet" along with the grilled vegetables that were overcooked and soggy. All the extra water caused this bowl to turn into a wet mess towards the bottom. Prices were in line with other burrito type places but I would prefer Chipotle over this.

Been meaning to get in here for a few months now and finally had the opportunity this afternoon. I have been on the lookout for good Mexican food since moving to KC and so far the gems have been few and far between. That said, Burrito Bros do make one hell of a burrito. I'd rank them a couple steps above Chipotle and with a smaller price tag to boot.
(4)Charles D.
Best burrito in town. Better than Chipotle, better than Freebirds (then again, what isn't?), better than QDoba. Their chicken and steak are great. The pork is ok, and is pretty much the only thing here that is not as good as Chipotle. The salsas are good too. I would prefer them a little chunkier, but they are good as is. I've taken at least five friends here and all have agreed that it is better than all the other burrito places around town.
(5)Jeremy W.
Until further notice, this is the best burrito you will have in the Kansas City area. So in a world populated by Chipotles and a city with emerging "burrito" restaurant brands, how do I persuade you to take a bite of KC's best burrito? Let me start off with the initial burrito creation. A helping of cheese is sprinkled across your tortilla and quickly steamed and crisped so that the cheese melts and the tortilla becomes a warm blanket for your fillings. Within the first couple of moments, they win me over. The quintessential choice is your meats, and you can't go wrong with chicken or steak, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not trying one of their other burritos. There's the deliciously spicy Chorizo, which goes great with their breakfast burrito as well, and there's shrimp. Also, they prove you don't always need meat with their spinach or portobello mushroom choices. While I haven't sampled the mushrooms, the spinach is something I wish other places would offer because the mild salty taste of the spinach really meshes well with the other flavors. As for their salsas...While I may not have sampled every single one, the multi-tiered levels of flavor, spice and chunkiness seems sufficient (while I myself don't prefer chunky). In a farmer's market, you would guess that they would use the available resources at hand to craft a farm grown salsa, and they do. While Chipotle offers Tabasco, there's no reason to ruin a perfectly flavored hot sauce they create. The price, selection, taste and thought of knowing you're buying family owned and family made food is hard not to pass up and love. If I didn't persuade you, a bite of their burrito will certainly do the trick.
(5)Stephen S.
I've been eating here ever since my coworker brought me here with the jaw-dropping line of "It's better than Chipotle" which I could not believe. You never have to worry about just getting a bite of just rice, the cheese steamed with the tortilla holds everything together, it comes with tortilla chips, the employees are nice, and the chicken is so much better than any other burrito place. For those of you who haven't been here, if it doesn't end up being your favorite burrito place (we're all different), you will still walk out not being disappointed.
(5)Alan M.
Chipotle, Jr. That might as well be the name of Burrito Bros. Being within walking distance, I tend to go here more often than the aforementioned Chipotle, but that's more out of convienence than anything else. I mean, it's a burrito, so it's not too hard to say, "Hey, this is pretty good." However, it's not an amazing burrito. The taste is just kind....bland overall. Nothing really stands out. Even when I toss their ghost pepper hot sauce on there, it doesn't seem that spicy. I do, however, enjoy the fact you get a handful of chips with your order. You know, for the extra carbs. They are working on expanding and will eventually have later hours, but I don't see how that will help their taste. Also of note, if you order something that people don't normally get (so, the portobello burrito instead of, say, a canitas burrito) they have to fresh cook the main ingredient. Just be prepared for a bit of a wait if that's the case. Not a huge deal, but might be of concern to some.
(3)Guillermo V.
Just as good if not better than Chipotle. They have more options of what you can get (tamales, quesadillas etc) but less options of what to put on your weapon of choice (no lettuce).
(4)Neil B.
I had a chicken burrito with guacamole, pico, guacamole, rice, and medium salsa. It was very good; ingredients were fresh and the burrito came with chips. I would definitely recommend for lunch. I would like to come back to try their tacos as well.
(4)Thomas A.
I love this place. I've been here twice now. I had a taco salad the first time and it was mighty fine but I could have used more chips. The second time, recently, I had a chorizo burrito with refried beans, guac, pico and cheese. Delicious, and ample. Service is great and quick.
(3)Chris M.
I'm actually impressed with my willpower to avoid this place as often as I crave it. I love the Chorizo burrito, with cheese melted inside the tortilla, with black beans, rice, and hot salsa. The freebie chips are icing on the cake. In essence they are in direct competition with the Chipotle @ Power and Light, but why anyone in the River Market would support a chain over this locally owned gem is beyond me. If you're really hungry, and want to not be hungry again for 6-8 hours, give the Burrito Bros. a visit. If you're watching your figure, move along.
(5)Amber H.
So much flavor...I was craving a hearty warm breakfast burrito on a cold fall day and this place did not fail one bite! Burrito bros beats chipotle and similar chains hands down on price, flavor, options and taste! I will be back very soon with my burrito lovin' family.
(5)Caitlyn S.
This place was sooooo yummy! What a nice change from other build your own burrito places - I love the Portobello choice for vegetarians! My husband loved the chorizo option as well. Chipotle needs to get on board the chorizo train. During a weekend visit to KC, we heard about City Market and how it is "food truck central" but we didn't hear about the places that have a permanent place, like Burrito Bros. After some searching on the web and yelp, we found Burrito Bros because my husband was craving some burrito action and I didn't want to go somewhere we could go in Wichita. I am so glad we drove up there, and I wish we would have had more time to explore the market. Burrito Bros had some good deals, including their two tacos + drink + chips for $6 or $7. We both chose burritos, though, which also included chips. (Score.) I would go back frequently if I lived nearby!
(5)Amanda S.
It is certainly comparable to Chipotle, but Burrito Bros. offers more variety. I sampled the chorizo burrito on my first trip and it was delicious. They cooked it right in front if me, even though it was the middle of lunch hour. Very fresh. I also really enjoyed the melted cheese on my burrito and the side of chips. Great lunchtime meal.
(4)Cindy R.
I've only been here a few times and each time I've gotten tacos to-go since I didn't have time to eat at the River Market. Maybe I'm making the mistake of getting the tacos and not the burrito but I didn't feel as though they had yummy salsa or good toppings to go on things... I felt as though I had a meat stuffed taco (I got a chicken and steak) and a little bit of guac in them with a vinegar style salsa... It wasn't my favorite and the meat seemed dry/tough. The food wasn't as fresh as I would have hoped but maybe that is because I went at an off time... I do really love burritos and the Chipotle style so I'm going to just rate them as "okay" until I try a burrito and not compare it to my favorite things there so I don't judge it too much!
(3)Nicole K.
The burrito tastes like heaven, which would be enough by itself. But this place also has friendly, personable service that often includes a few laughs to brighten your day (if the guy tells you he put the wrong salsa on your burrito, he's pulling your leg). The burrito is just as big as the one you get from Chipotle, but you get it with fresher-tasting ingredients from a local business. I like to get mine with extra pico de gallo and top it with their nice tomatillo salsa, but you've got options. The BF loves their carnitas and their guacamole, and we both love the fact they give you fresh chips with every order. Plus, the location in the market is muy convenient!
(5)South O.
First, let me address all the comparisons to the chain restaurants. SHUT UP! If you want chain food, go there! This is a local owned restaurant. Some of us really appreciate that in a business. I actually am not a fan of the chain that other's have mentioned - yet I LOVE Burrito Bros. Go figure. I find everything just tastes like food here and not as processed - maybe it's my imagination? I just know I taste seasoning at Burrito Bros. and the other place is just rice in a tortilla - even with their hottest sauce. I also had occasion to use BB as a caterer and they blew me away! Value for the dollar was incredible, and the service was beyond great! Skip the chain and buy local. You'll be surprised at how good it is when you appreciate it as it is without comparison to a chain. Which is interesting...as the same people who tout the supremacy of their favorite chain would scoff at the idea that Olive Garden is the best pasta in any town. Hypocritical, really.
(4)Garrett S.
Best burrito's in the city! This place beats the pants off of every other chipotle wannabe in KC. They steam the cheese with the burrito which makes it nice and melty. The carnitas here are super juicy and always delicious and the tomatillo sauce (mild green sauce) is a perfect complement to the other flavors. I enjoy chipotle and it's inevitable that BB's will be compared to them, but the food here is above and beyond anything I've had there. totally worth it!
(5)Wayne F.
Great place, good price, good food. Fresh and tasty ingredients. Carnitas meat was a bit on the greasy side, but quite good.
(4)Michelle F.
They were a little unorganized getting thorough the line, which was nearly out the door BTW, but everyone was friendly and we got it figured out. I had a chicken bowl with rice, black beans, cheese and assorted toppings. The chicken was highly seasoned and juicy, great stuff, and all high quality. No grissely or inedible pieces. The guac tasted fresh and had good flavor. Love that you get a bit of chips on the side. The service is fast, the price is right. Go forth and get yer burrito on!
(4)Yoie L.
What sets Burrito Bros apart from Chipotle or Qdoba is their customer service. We frequently do catering with them and the owner and his father are always super friendly. They even help me carry all the stuff to my car seeing I'm a small little person and can't carry everything. The father is really lovely and he enjoys talking about his son and how he helps him out whenever he can. How sweet. The only thing I don't like is everything cost extra. I would definitely do catering here as they always give you chips and salsa whenever we do catering. But it's a tad more expensive if you're here just to grab lunch. Nevertheless, I really enjoy how friendly these people are and it's good to support local business.
(4)Cait W.
Better flavor than chipotle, and you're supporting a local business! Love that every entree comes with free chips! Burrito Bros used to just be a lunch time stop, but they recently extended their hours to 8 pm. Worth it!
(4)Daniel H.
I ate lunch here with my fellow associates. I ordered a steak burrito ($6.25) and a fountain soda ($1.75). It was similar to Chipotle where you tell them what you want on your food. Oh and almost everything costs extra like cheese, guacamole and some others that I forgot. I think every order comes with chips. There weren't too many seats inside because the place was pretty small. The steak burrito tasted good and even better with the hot sauce on every table. The steak wasn't like what I'm used to in California where it had a grilled taste to it; however, this was still good. I forgot to take a picture of the hot sauce but try it out if you like your food spicy/hot. It was pretty busy while we were eating and the line almost went out the door. I saw somebody order a quesadilla and that looked pretty good. I think I'll have to come back to try those.
(4)Faith B.
Fresh Tex Mex style burritos, made while you wait. I really liked the portobello burrito and I thought there chips were quite good - light, crispy and salty. But why no salsa with the free chips? Friendly staff and fast service booted them up a star for me
(4)David A.
Chipotle, with a friendlier touch and much tastier. Portions are large. The burrito was huge. Also, the order was made rather quickly. Good for a quick lunch. The staff was quite friendly had long chats with us and other customers. Drawback: No salsa to go with your chips, just hot sauce. I didn't really enjoy that. All in all, I'd rather spend my $$$ here than Chipotle.
(3)Matt E.
awww man. I hadn't been to Burrito Bros in quite some time. Since my last visit, many of my friends (both Yelp and the real world) have been all "Hey Matt, Burrito Bros is amazing, why only 3 stars? What gives?" I decided today that it was high time to give them another chance, see if my perspective had changed. Well, it hadn't. The level of customer service is still sky high. The price is right. The menu LOOKS appealing and tastes great. It's just still such a damn mess! Today I got tacos instead of their namesake burrito. They come individually wrapped in aluminum foil, and when i broke into that first one, my worst fears were confirmed... I was holding a slimy, messy taco. I think it has to do with how they melt the cheese directly onto the tortilla w/ some sort of steamer. I don't get the point of this. Instead of a regular press heating up the tortilla, they go this route and lock in a ton of extra moisture. Add to that incredibly runny pico, and the whole thing was just a huge frickin mess to eat. Tasty, yeah. But from a tactile (and just general manners) perspective, I think Burrito Bros is kinda icky. *** I just want it to be said that I feel guilty writing this review, as the people who work here are genuinely kind and professional. I wish them continued success, I just wish they had a product that had a bit more structural integrity. ***

Please go to this great little place in the City Market! So embarrassed that we've lived in River Market for over four years and just had Burrito Bros. for the first time tonight. I had a chicken burrito with extra hot sauce and it was delicous. Very flavorful and giant! My boyfriend had a pork burrito bowl, which he also enjoyed. Generous portions of chips accompanied both meals. Sadly, the man running the place was hanging out alone--there were no customers. We plan to go here a lot and will spread the word. Independent restaurants like Burrito Bros. are really important, so we hope more folks will skip the chain restaurants and visit Burrito Bros. instead. We hope this wonderful place can continue to hang on until all of the slated apartment construction projects are done. It's a gem!
(5)Karen N.
No frills, EXCELLENT burritos. Mild sauce is spicy, so watch out for the HOT! I'll be back.
(4)Gabriela D.
This place is not all that organized. It's not really a good burrito and when I asked them if their black beans were vegan, the answer was, "I think so."

I've been a big fan of this place ever since it opened. The staff are friendly and the owner is great to work with. Others have reviewed in detail the food: delicious, fresh, and reasonably-priced. Long story short, we had these guys cater our wedding. It worked out great.
(5)Ellen S.
Yes, this is a burrito place. Yes, they serve the best burrito I've ever had. Yes, we asked them to cater our wedding. I could rave and rave and RAVE about these beautiful burritos. Very seriously in my list of top five favorite foods EVER. My perfect combo: Cheese on the tortilla, extra rice, black beans, shrimp, un poco de pico (just a little), guacamole, and the medium fire-roasted sauce. I will occasionally order this with portabello instead just to keep the staff on their toes. BB was super easy as a caterer, too. We only needed to give them a few day's notice for them to have 120 burritos delivered to our venue. They were, as always, ridiculously nice about everything. And, even after being frozen for two weeks and poorly re-warmed in my office's 1980s-era microwave, the burritos were so, so good. TL;DR: Eat here. Get the shrimp or the portobello burritos. YUM.

My burrito was pretty good, but nothing to write home about (since "home" is Southern California). Most of the things I read about this place were comparisons to Chipotle, which is fair, but I get the impression there isn't much else around here. Maybe it was better than Chipotle, but not exponentially. It's Chipotle-style, where you build your burrito down the line. Quality was pretty comparable. The chicken did have nice flavor though, with some char and good seasoning - they have that over Chipotle. Good for a casual burrito. Don't think any out of town visitors would be impressed.

Long story short: Chipotle-esque type of establishment, but without that corporate chain restaurant feel. Long story long: Now, let me just preface this by saying that I LOVE Chipotle, but if I happen to come across a burrito of its equal, I will have no problem cheating on Chipotle. With that said... My girlfriend and I decided to spend lunch and an afternoon together, and I she hadn't explored Kansas City proper a whole lot. I told her about City Market and that seemed to convince her. I looked up the restaurants they had here and this seemed to fit the bill. As are most of the stores at City Market, this place is on the smaller side, with the dining room being able to seat maybe 15-18 people, with one or two more tables outside. The set up is very similar to Chipotle in the sense that you walk up to the counter, tell them what you want, and they walk you down an assembly line of various meats, salsas, and your typical items that you would put in a burrito. I decided to get a carne asada burrito with black beans, rice, roasted corn salsa, pico de gallo, monterey jack cheese, guacamole (doesn't cost extra!!! or did it?). My girlfriend got the grilled chicken with whatever it was she got in it. We just got water for our beverages and the cost came out to about the same if not a few cents cheaper than at Chipotle. We went to go sit at the table outside and dug in. Wow... it was really good. Everything was fresh and the meat was really good. I tried my girlfriend's grilled chicken and that was very good as well. I just really liked the fact that the service style is similar to Chipotle, yet you don't get that corporate chain restaurant/Americanized feel. Again, I LOVE Chipotle, but this place was definitely just as good if not better in its own little way. The people working there are really nice and as I was getting my burrito, I heard some Christian music playing from the kitchen, a worship leader that used to be at the International House of Prayer here in Kansas City, so it was comforting to know that I was supporting a fellow Christian. I would definitely come back here, it's just a shame its a little bit out of the way from where I live.

The other night while waiting for Devo to take the stage at Buzz Under the Stars, I was desperately hungry and it appeared that most places in the City Market were closed (yeah, that makes perfect sense. Close when there are thousands of people camping out for hours to see a concert), with the exception of a few food stands and Burrito Bros. Not surprisingly, the line was about out the door, but I stood on it anyway, because when you're really hungry, a burrito sounds just about right, even if it was practically 95 degrees with 65% humidity at 7pm. I pushed aside all thoughts of the typical gross way I feel after consuming a burrito that would surely be the size and weight of a small infant and waited on line. I reasoned if the wait was too long, I probably wasn't hungry enough anyway, so I could just sashay...away and be 1,000 calories leaner. But the hunger was strong and so I stayed and shockingly, before I knew it was my turn in line. Their line of operation moves *fast*! For that I was thankful. Although I had asked for a bowl, he thought I said burrito and by the time I saw the spinach being pressed into the burrito, I was sold (although I rarely, if ever, eat white flour burritos. I was too weary to ask for a do-over). Guac is extra and I am OK with that b/c avocados are expensive and if it's good, I don't care. I'll pay the extra. What I do care about is that they are stingy with the salsa. I had to ask two times for more and OK, although I know I need a bizarre amount of salsa, don't make me ask for it twice and expect me to be doling out 5 stars. I've been to plenty of restaurants where they leave the salsa out for you to take as much as you want, or they refill your bowls on the table. These are the little things, the little extras that make me return to places (Taco Chulo in Brooklyn, for example, has three squeeze bottles of amazing salsa and I drown the damn burrito baby in it! It's also standard practice in Cali to have the squeeze bottles or an entire salsa bar!) The burrito was tasty. Not the best I've ever had, but just A-OK. Of course it would have been way better with the amount of salsa that I normally pour over burritos. I definitely had to empty the salt shaker out on it. One really annoying thing...ok, two. -signs proclaiming "no public restrooms." If I am buying food from you, you should be decent enough to provide rest rooms for me as your customer. The "public" thing just irked me. Sure, I can understand not allowing people to just walk in and use the restroom without buying anything. -the a/c was either not working, or turned down so low, it made it barely cooler than outside. Unacceptable.s I just feel that they cut corners with what should be standard unless you're paying food truck prices: as much salsa as you deem necessary because you are a grown up and know what you like by now, bathrooms and air conditioning. Because I like to end reviews on a positive note, I must say that the staff is extremely nice here, from the guys on the burrito assembly line to the guy taking your money. Friendliness in addition to efficiency goes a long way!

I imagine if I were Burrito Bros, Chipotle would be like my older, more attractive, more successful brother. My parents would harp on me "Why cant you be more like your brother?" and "you know your brother uses organic beef, have you ever considered using organic beef?" I cant in good faith compare burrito bros to Chipotle because Chipotle has found the cosmic burrito algorithm that no one will ever surpass and I would just be setting my self up for disapointment. I will, however, say this; Burrito Bros is just pretty darn good. They are quick, tasty and affordable. And hey! they're local so support them dammit. I promise it wont hurt Chipotle's bottom line. I had the pork burrito, it was juicy and delicious. I also really enjoyed the salsas. Although, I think giving me tortilla chips at no charge, and then expecting me to pay for extra salsa is poor form. Everyone knows tortilla chips are just a vehicle for salsa and no business just laying around on a plate. Ill be back Burrito Bros. Keep it up...

This place is great, but the staff is not always friendly. They seem to be in a rush and don't want to make any small talk. The steak and shrimp is a great choice, but it does not compare to chipotle. I do enjoy going here on my lunch break though because it is close to work and a decent price.

Dashing from under a sudden downpour at River Market, I was starving and Rico's wasn't open on Mondays. (Yes, I tried to go to Rico's a fourth time in a week.) Burrito Brothers, however, was, and I decided to chance it--though I didn't have much else in the way of choices, as on the weekdays River Market can be a bit of a ghost town. The food is pretty good. But the service was a little...TOO friendly. At first I thought I was being mistaken for a regular, because the way the guy behind the counter talked to me, it was like we were old pals. That's a little off putting when you just got drenched trying to save your new leather shoes and you're shivering cold. I asked my friends if they'd been here before. Nope, not them either. I guess they were just super glad to see other humans. I chose a burrito bowl (not just for Chipotle!) with shrimp, and I was impressed that they were grilled for me right on the spot. And like I said before, it was pretty good. It was just that first impression that kinda creeped me out and made me check if the gaslamps weren't flickering (see: Ingrid Bergman, Gaslight, 1944). Burrito Brothers, I am not your sister. Tone down the familiarity and I'd like Burrito Brothers more.
(3)Matthew S.
Hey Chipotle regulars, you're doing it wrong! Burrito Brothers: locally owned (the owner's dad will probably be checking you out), awesome friendly service, a steamed tortilla resulting in perfectly chewy texture and melty cheese, located in the uber-awesome City Market, armed amazing vegetarian options including a close-to-heave portabella, offering quesadillas and other options, not charging you more for chips and guac (the former you'll need to scoop up the extra flavor-packed ingredients falling out of your burrito), better salsas -- even breakfast options? Fogeddaboudit. Burrito Brothers wins. I just wish they were open in the evening, which is a tough ask for any business in the City Market, but seems to be slowly changing. Someday I'll eat this tasty fare for dinner. In the meantime, I'll sit happily full from lunch and dream of that moment.

My attraction is fading and I hate to admit it. Last week the P&L was overrun with bball fans, so I couldn't use my Human Society coupon at Chipotle :(. Headed to Burrito Bros. for a quick fix only to find a major cluster in order. When it was finally my turn, I realized that it was a service issue and not the fact that there was a run or burritos. I am a stickler for efficiency, so watching the this place in action almost sends me into a frenzy. Why the hell do you have to reach for things under the counter, in bags and across the room during a lunch rush? Has anyone BB employee ever made a single trip to Chipotle? It's not rocket since, it is an assembly line. Quit digging for stuff in bags and put it on the line. It is even more frustrating when you notice "cashier guy" refusing to do anything other then take money, even when no one is checking out. I can't believe I was able to hold it together when I watched a scrambling employee pull a pan out of the hot water bath and drip it across my entire burrito. He rolled up my burrito like nothing happened! I thought about that pan juice in my burrito the entire ride home, lost my appetite and decided I will take a big burrito break.
(2)Clayton R.
Yay! I love Burrito Bros. When I worked North of the river, we would come down here every so often to partake in the best non-Chipotle burrito around. The owner regularly works the shop, and everything from the outdoor seating in the market, to the massive amounts of goodies you get in your burrito is worth the trip. The price is also very reasonable, and you get extras that Chipotle upcharges for. all in all, Burrito Bros is a great little local shop that has huge burritos and a nice atmosphere. Now they're also open on Sundays! Win.
(4)Adam D.
I live in the river market and burrito bros is a on the rotation of places I frequent. The staff is very friendly and the owner, or owners dad, seem to always be there serving happy customers. If I had to guess I would say I have eaten there... 25+ times, and it's always solid. I rotate between the shrimp burrito, chicken burrito, or chicken bowl. I would say that it is certainly a strong chipotle competitor in that their items are tasty, reasonably priced, and somewhat unique. If you get a burrito they actually melt your cheese onto the tortilla which is pretty yummy. Additionally, their sauces and pico are on point. My major complaint would be the size of internal seating, but on nice day they have ample seating outside and you can enjoy sights, sounds, and smells of the market. I would say that Burrito bros is definitely worth a try. It certainly is on the way to my heart via my stomach.
(4)Jennifer C.
This is where I like to go for a burrito. I am not a vegetarian but I love their Portabello mushroom burrito. Even the burrito bowl is a pretty good, less messy option. I like the hot sauce and guacamole. Everyone here is very friendly. When I have to wait in line I always feel that it is worth it. The only thing I wish is that their hours were better so I get get this tasty goodness anytime I want.

What was initially going to be a 3 star review has become a 4 star review. Barely. Here's why! Like other fast food burrito places, the most important thing to keep in mind is to try what is on the menu. Do not try to mimic your favorite burrito from Chipotle at World Burrito, and do not be afraid to try new things at Burrito Bros. It was once I ventured away from my Chipotle 'usual' that I fell in love with this place. The menu is not exactly adventurous but it doesn't really need to be. You can have whatever you in whichever form you want and the menu portrays just that. Downfall, it is a little hard to read with the white chalk on messy chalkboard feel. Also, the prices are cheap which is really the only thing I to the menu to tell me! The meal that changed my opinion from a 3 to a 4 star review is the Spinach burrito. Sounds too healthy and boring but friends, it's really good. They steam the spinach and tiny amount of cheese that I have them put on there so that it has the feeling of a quesadilla. There is something about a little bit of melted cheese that tastes so much better than cold shreds of cheese. Normally steaming spinach is a huge no-no in my book but somehow it is ok when mixed with black beans, rice, pico, salsa and the money ingredient: guacamole! Service here cannot be overlooked. An absolute 6 stars should be rewarded to the folks who work here, particularly the elderly gentleman who always manages to make me smile. From my first visit there years ago to today's visit, he has always been extraordinarily kind and I can really tell he loves his life and his job. And that is not just because he gives me the occasional free guacamole. :) If you ever have a minute to spare, chat with him! He has great stories. He's even talked soccer with me and some of my friends before. BUT it is not just him providing the stellar customer service. The guys building the burritos are quick and do not ask a lot of questions-which I like. They also listen. Light cheese does not mean half of a large handful, it means, a little bit. And that is what they give me so that I can indulge without ruining my day or having to take a 'milk pill' to enjoy. It took me a while to become a believer but now this is my first choice when craving a burrito that is the size of of a small child. Their main fault is not being open for dinner but let's be honest. It's probably not a responsible eating decision, health-wise, to eat 1,000 calories of tortilla and beans right before bed. So maybe instead of dogging them for their hours, we should thank them!
(4)Carolyn A.
A local delight Would pick over Chipotle Great veggie options!
(5)Tim M.
They seem to have fixed the structural issues with their burritos...mine didn't fall apart this time. I recommend getting the chorizo or shrimp burrito...these are cooked-to-order, while all the other fillings are pre-cooked. Very tasty stuff. Would be five stars, but it doesn't feel squeaky clean...the food is excellent though...
(4)Cyrena K.
If you decide to get the burrito you better build up your forearm strength for this weighty and delicious meal. The best part hands down was the guacamole.
(5)Vicky T.
I agree with one of the earlier reviewers: If you want chain restaurant's burrito then go there. don't compare this local treasure bow to a generic eat. My brother introduced me to this place before he left to San Francisco, but every time he returns he does not fail to go out of his way to pay this place a visit, if not several. The service is absolutely warm and friendly, and the food and quality is excellent. Local eat means freshly prepared / no preservatives. Definitely good portion too for its pricing. Strike a conversation with the owner too! He is a great guy to talk to. Lots of well-meaning depth to him
(4)Diane C.
Burrito Bros is one of my favorite spots in the City Market. I almost always get two chicken tacos with cheese, black beans, rice, pico and 5 pepper salsa! Quite the delight for lunch! Stop by and get you some Burrito Bros!
(4)Erin E.
IF what you think you want is Chipotle then what you really want is this. Their chicken is fire grilled and well seasoned. They grill their peppers and onions as well so they are cooked more than at the competitions (which i like) and have that smokey flavor. The rice is super flavorful. The black and pinto beans, like all beans are fairly bland, but soak up all the other flavors. I have sampled all of their excellent salsas and sauces...all homemade and all excellent (i'm a spice lightweight so i like the med green sauce the best). I happen to really enjoy their slightly runny sour cream, it adds the right coolness and texture to the burrito. The staff is friendly and seem invested in the success of the business, which is WAY more than i can say about certain chains. They almost always have a lunch special that includes chips and a drink for 5.99 (it rotates around but its usually in the taco/burrito/quesadilla dept.)
(4)Tom K.
I kinda wish Burrito Bros didn't do the whole Chipotle imitation thing. It's better than that. In fact Burrito Bros is better than Chipotle. Yes...I said it. Better flavors, fresher ingredients, melted cheese, locally owned. Boo-ya! Throw out the metallic paneling and I'll feel more comfortable saying I'm a fan of such a tasty, needed addition to the City Market. If you're looking for "man food" that's relatively cheap, tasty, and fresh; you won't find much better options downtown than Burrito Bros.
(4)Katie H.
Like Chipotle but it falls short. I like the option of the Portobello burrito, because the chicken just isn't that good. They burritos are a little bigger than Chipotle but Chiptole is better tasting. This place is nice for me because I work in the River Market area, but I would rather have Chipotle in a heartbeat.
(3)Kelsey C.
I really liked Burrito Bros. Yes, it is kind of like Chipotle, but they offer quesadillas, which is what I had. The chicken was really fresh-tasting, and I liked the amount of cheese they put on the quesadilla - it wasn't overwhelming and was just the right amount. I will definitely go there again- it's a lot of food for $6 and is really close to my work.
(4)Holly T.
Yum!!!!! As if the food wasn't good enough, the service is amazing. Servers I have seen once remember me, my husband, and most importantly ... My order. They make suggestions to try new things and are always right on the money with my taste. I highly recommend this not so hidden gem.
(5)Scott M.
Yes, there's something about the burritos here that makes them fall apart. (Since I don't like beans and therefore don't get them, my theory is that the rice has too much moisture.) But I don't care that they are messy to eat, these burritos are damn good. I hate to draw comparisons to Chipotle, but it's hard not do. The meat is better quality and more flavorful than at Chipotle. I love the 5 different salsa to choose from. Since they are made from scratch they don't always taste exactly the same each time, but I think that makes it interesting and I enjoy the variety. To me, these burritos taste tremendously better than what Chipotle offers. My only complaint is the hours. This place closes way too early, so I rarely get to eat there even though I live only a block away. How much more does it really cost to stay open until at least 8pm, especially when the owner is the one doing the work?
(4)Chad S.
Over the last nine months or so, I have been making an effort to "go local" as much as possible; or at least to support local businesses. When I discovered Burrito Bros. it seemed like it could be a good alternative to my often visited lunch spot, Chipotle. Unlike some other reviews on here, I can't address the issue of the burritos falling apart because 95% of the time I order a burrito bowl without rice. It's not that I'm a fan of the Atkins/South Beach or any other low carb trend, it's just the sheer weight of Chipotle's tortilla in my stomach often left me lethargic and too full to make it through my afternoon at work. Besides, if I'm going to ingest that many carbs, they'd better be part of a nice thick pint of stout. I've been to Burrito Bros. twice now and, on both occasions, was very satisfied. I've found the food to be very good and fresh tasting. The beans are a bit runny (maybe why the tortillas don't hold together), but I don't mind that when eating from the bowl. Their pico de gallo and other sauces seem fresh and, on my last visit, I tempted fate and had the Hot Hot sauce, an excellent green sauce that has as much flavor as heat. I do take my lunch a little later than most of the working world, so I can't really address their speed when busy - I'm usually the only one in there. But I have enjoyed both of my visits and will definitely be going back often.

I hate to have to give a decent local establishment two stars, but this place really didn't do it for me. Let me get to the positives because there were many. Firstly, the owner was a friendly guy and pretty good at promoting his business. Second, there is a nice selection of available meats, at least in theory since not all seemed available at the time I was there...of course, I didn't ask either so who knows. There were multiple sauces available to go on the burritos, and the owner was out front giving samples of each with chips (only for sampling, they aren't dipping sauces). Each was good. The one with the fire roasted vegetables was probably the best. Now, basically, the burrito was ok. For some reason everything is very wet, including the tortillas. I assume they were kept in a steam table. This didn't cause too much problem in the finished product; it just seemed strange. I found the meat (I had carnitas) to be somewhat bland. The black beans were ok. I just wasn't impressed unfortunately. I have to say: I'd rather just go to Chipotle. Wow, there it is. My only reconciliation in this statement is that, as far as chains go, Chipotle is top notch in my experience. To Burrito Bros. - sorry.

There are things in life I just don't understand. I don't understand why people don't want to reform healthcare. I don't understand why the Royals are perennially terrible. And I don't understand why people say Burrito Bros is better than Chipotle. Personal sentiments aside, I thought I'd try it out. The burrito was decent. The end. But seriously, the flavors didn't really flow together, my burrito dripped and collapsed after a few bites. I shrugged my shoulders and chalked up another win for Chipotle
(2)Beth A.
One of my favorite places to eat in all of KC! I usually order the pork carnitas with tacos or quesidilla. The fire roasted salsa and pico details gallo can't be beat! Aside from the delicious food, the best part about going is being served by such nice people! I never fail to leave with a smile on my face, because of both the food and the conversation!
(4)Hannah L.
Ditch Chipotle, go local - check out Burrito Bros in the River Market. I have never been disappointed here, full flavored Mexican cuisine with a great smile! Before I went pescatarian I always went for the chicken - so tender and flavorful it melts in your mouth. Now though I lean towards the shrimp (grilled fresh in front of your eyes- bam!) or the spinach with onions and peppers. If you like spicy go for the Hot Chipotle - the other homemade salsas are a bit mild in my opinion, although delicious. The guac is worth the extra $1.25, made fresh daily and leaves me licking the container every time (I know, not the prettiest picture). If you're concerned about making a mess, get rid of the extra calories and go with the bowl. I will say though that the melted cheese inside of the burrito is genius. Mmmm, mmmm, mmmm! The service here has always been top-notch for me. The owner is so nice and actually seems geniunely appreciative that I chose his restauarant to dine in - what a rare concept these days! He makes small talk about the market and always wishes me a great day. I leave the joint with a smile on my face and a belly in eager anticipation of the Mexican feast it's about to endure! YUM!
(5)Kayla B.
I've given Burrito Bros a few chances, and really want to love this place, but it is just alright. Everything is made in house, all the beans are vegan (plus for them), and it all tastes fresh! Huge pluses in my opinion. But honestly I wanted something more! The flavors and textures were all just...meh. Onions and peppers were overcooked, and everything just felt kinda mushy. The guac was delicious, which made up for a lot. But I had to pay extra for that. Lame. I probably won't go back to Burrito Bros. Frankly, Chipotle is better. Shit, I think I lost some cool points there.
(3)Nick D.
This is a solid place to grab a quick Chipotle style burrito. It has more of a home style feel unlike Chipotle which is refreshing.
(4)Kelly R.
I don't make it to Kansas City very often, but luckily I have some college buddies and it is now a KC staple to go to Burrito Bros. It's right in the heart of the City Market which is a FANTASTIC farmer's market which is definitely a plus. Our buddies who introduced us go every week, so they're on a first name basis with the owner/staff. When they heard we came from STL and requested to eat lunch there, the drinks were on the house. Pretty generous for a small family owned business, I'd say!!! It's definitely a way to get some repeat business and a great yelp review :-) Their burritos are wonderful! Large enough to be a meal or possibly 2 and the ingredients are extremely fresh and flavorful. I love Qdoba and Chipotle, but the burritos here seem to have a little more flavor. The ingredients meld together better than the other chains somehow. You know how you bite into a burrito from Chipotle and sometimes you just get a big bite of cilantro and rice, or maybe just cheese that's half melted? You don't get that here! The cheese is melted straight onto the tortilla and the ingredients work together well so you're not eating just layers of ingredients. Their chips are fresh and tasty, and the guacamole has a great fresh kick to it. Like I said, I still love Qdoba and Chipotle, but I probably only go there because Burrito Bros is 230 miles away!

Since I live down here I make it a point to strongly support all of my river market brethren. I've been visiting Burrito Bros. fairly regularly since I moved down here and I feel like it's been a rewarding food-friendship. So let's get into it. Obviously the comparisons to Chipotle are common, and rightly so; the business model here is pretty similar. What is different however is the seasoning of the food. I don't want to make it sound like I'm knocking Chipotle, I've been overall pretty happy there. However I like the seasoning at Burrito Bros better because it has a bit more kick in it, which I like. I've tried all sorts of things here, but I find myself generally gravitating towards the chicken quesadilla because I like it the best. I've watched them make their pico before and the tomatoes always come out plump and flavorful. The salsa always tastes good, however I always have to ask for at least a double dose, as they never put enough on the first (or sometimes second) time. I also never get their beans because they just taste bland, and I feel like that ruins the burrito, so I don't recommend those. Size wise...well, anyone who tells you size doesn't matter is lying! I have yet to completely finish anything in a single setting, not to mention the home made chips that you get...good lord! I will OFTEN make it about halfway through and then pack the rest away for next days lunch. I'm not going to complain about that, it makes for good cheap eats. Service and atmosphere, this place has a good dive feel to it, nestled in the middle of the river market it has a great location, but is only open for lunch. Owners are very friendly and take their time to at least get to recognize you if you're a regular visitor. Negatives, sometimes the staff does jump around each other when it's busy and confuses orders, however this isn't the norm. The seating is pretty standard with an outside patio for the nicer days, and Saturdays make a nice people watching day. Pretty good overall, I won't claim the greatest Mexican food in the world by any means, but doing a great job.
(4)Aimee R.
My family and I went to City Market for the first time last Sunday. I have to say our burritos (chicken & carnitas) were pretty good. Even better, the guacamole was amazing! I'll definitely be going back for more.
(4)Larissa B.
We moved to the River Market a few weeks ago and just managed to make it to this small but busy local business. It has been on our list of places to try since we have only heard great things about it. The atmosphere and the staff were friendly (although the guy making my burrito did have a little too much eye contact) and it was nice to take our food outside, grab a table, and people watch. I enjoyed the variety of meats and all the different salsas they offer. I love spicy food so the extra hot salsa hit the spot! Now I'm notorious for making a mess out of my food, but it's not like I had to try very hard in this case. My burrito essentially just fell apart in my hands when I tried to eat it. Eventually I just had to make a kind of makeshift bowl out of the aluminum foil wrapper and eat it with a fork. That being said, the chicken was well seasoned and juicy and I like that they melt the cheese on your tortilla. It was a bit heavy for lunch though, next time I think I will try the tacos.
(3)John D.
Amazing food, staff is really friendly and the food comes out fast! Been eating at BB since day one.
(5)Patrick R.
Tasty burritos! Family-run business at the River Market. The owner's father came up and talked to us the first time we went there. It's been personal and friendly everytime we've been back. Thumbs up!
(5)Michael G.
Nice River Market location. Great vegetarian burritos, good price.
(4)Gregg S.
I had mixed expectations walking in here... but it was so good! Honestly it had a taco bell or w/e look but it was full of flavor. The carnita (pork) tacos were excellent. Give it a chance, it is amazing and tell the guy in glasses the Floridians sent you!
(5)Bill A.
Think Chipotle, only fresher, friendlier, and.. fabulous-er? Tastier, anyway. I got the portabello mushroom burrito. Man, those mushrooms. Their pico is pretty great, too.
(4)Marie D.
Ah! So tasty! Veggies and meat had that fire-roasted flavor, Yummy salsas and super guac. All with the soul of a local joint. The owner's dad is the best. He reminds me of my own dad, a stand-up guy who just likes life and likes to visit. My dad lives out of state so it's perfect, I can get my dad fix and a great burrito in one stop.
(4)Joe H.
Awesome burrito. It's pretty much a local Chipotle in the way your food is created. They apparently get all the produce fresh that day from the market outside to make the pico, salsa, etc. The meat/mushroom selection looks good, although they only had pork or steak available the time I went. I like how they steam the tortilla with the cheese on it so it melts right away. You get chips with your order, but it's not very much. With the burrito, you don't really need them, but it might be good filler with smaller items like the taco. The space is a bit tight as it is a shop in the River Market. There are about 3 or 4 tables that seat four, and then a bunch of tables pushed together in the middle that seats eight. You might need to take it to go if you get there late in the lunch rush. As a final note, I find it a bit odd that a place that is only open from 11 - 3 serves a breakfast burrito. I will still probably go back and try it though. Great locally owned lunch spot.

Echoing that the concept is very much like Chipotle, but the food is TASTY! After my trips to Mexico, I get so tired of bland Mexican food. This place actually has flavor. I got the grilled chicken (excellent) burrito. The white cheese is some of the best I've had. The medium fire-grilled salsa was perfect. All their salsas are prepared on site, and made from fresh ingredients from the fruit and veggie markets next door. Before we were done eating we were all planning what we were going to get the next time. They have quesadillas, tacos, and a taco salad adding a variety to the burrito standby. The staff was patient while we surveyed the ingredients and asked questions. The head chef went the extra mile to make us feel welcome. There is outdoor seating for the nice days, and some decent people-watching opp's. If you're thinking this place is just another Chipotle wannabe, give it a try. You'll be glad you did.

When I walked out with my burrito for lunch today, I thought "Oh no, Chipotle wannabe". I couldn't have been more wrong. My Carnitas burrito with the Hot Hot sauce is Good Good Good. I can't believe I haven't tried this place before, I've been missing out. Fast, clean and reasonable prices ($6.58 for my lunch today).

Stumbled into Burrito Bros the other day after driving down to the River Market to try out Habashi House (but got there shortly after they closed). Good burritos (didn't have the issue of the them falling apart), style is similar to Chipotle but the rice is more so along the lines of Mexican rice versus Chipotle's white rice with cilantro. It does taste more authentic than Chipotle (at least to me), would consider going there more regularly, but I don't live in the neighborhood... and they're only open until about mid-afternoon so they're out of the question for dinner.

Burrito Bros. is nestled in the West side of the City Market among the produce vendors and other tiny lunch restaurants. I love this little joint already. Everything is really made really fresh, and the ingredients are simple and healthy but full of flavor. I got a portabello burrito today for lunch. Angel grilled a big portion of fresh portas in a pan while one of the owners got my tortilla ready with perfectly cooked rice and black beans that had a really nice flavor. I saw the standard meat options -- beef, chicken, pork-- plus chorizo, carnitas, steak, and seasoned pork, as well as bean & cheese, portabello, and spinach! I can't remember the last time I had something with portabellos that weren't undercooked, overcooked, or over-marinated. These were savory, meaty, tender while still firm-- al dente! To dress things up, they had grilled peppers, pico, tasty guacamole, and salsas that range from mild green tomatillo to a well-balanced habanero hot. They are friendly and genuine, the food is good and fast, and the flavor and quality make it a really good value. Another great addition to your City Market options.

This place is great. True, the concept is a lot like Chipotle, but I thought the flavors were slightly better and love how they melt the cheese on the inside of the tortilla. Highly recommend this place for a cheap, delicious, filling lunch!
